This graduate certificate program prepares you for a variety of journalism or media careers. You’ll learn in-demand skills, from researching and interviewing to data mining and content production. At Sheridan, you’ll develop a broad perspective that will prepare you to work in all news and information platforms.

Work with the latest journalism tools and technology

Sheridan’s newly renovated newsroom is a fully interactive space. It merges all media platforms (radio, television, web) into one centre. You’ll have access to state-of-the-art equipment and studio space, and will use a variety of camera formats to produce news stories, documentaries and other digital content.

Learning Outcomes

A graduate of the Journalism - New Media program will have demonstrated the ability to:

• Research, develop and write investigative news stories.
• Analyze knowledge from communities, current events, public affairs and history to interpret and express the context for a range of new media outlets.
• Broadcast news stories independently using a variety of new media techniques such as blogging, webcasting, podcasting and tweeting.
• Capture and edit professional quality images that communicate effectively for use in news stories using the appropriate equipment and techniques.
• Create and edit well-designed and technically sound e-news pages using industry standard software.
• Create and maintain all aspects of a daily, Internet-based, multimedia publication.
• Participate as an effective member of a team.
• Manage and lead a team of journalism professionals.
• Develop a portfolio that demonstrates creative and professional skills and abilities in journalism.
• Comply with and promote adherence to relevant Canadian legislation, standards, and the principles and practices of journalism.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program can expect a variety of employment scenarios, ranging from full-time, traditional employment to contract and freelance work to self-employment start ups. Students will work successfully in the field of news and information, television and radio, web and new media, production and communications.

• Postsecondary diploma or a degree or 2–3 year diploma (media-related is desired)
