About Physics With Nuclear Technology in University of West of Scotland

TRAIN FOR A CAREER IN NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY

The BSc Physics with Nuclear Technology course is the only one of its kind in Scotland, and is accredited by the Institute of Physics (IoP).

The programme develops your understanding of the fundamentals of physics as a core science, and will build your knowledge and professional skills to prepare you for a career in any area of physics, including industrial applications and academic research.

As the course has a focus on nuclear technology, you will be prepared for a career in the nuclear power industry, or in the use of nuclear technology in the healthcare sector.

Nuclear technology has far-reaching applications for our world; in medical imaging, environmental monitoring, radioactive dating, and nuclear energy generation. Nuclear physics and radiation detection are also prerequisites in conducting research in nuclear and particle physics at large laboratories such as CERN, the European organisation for Nuclear Research.

PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Specifically designed for students with an interest in nuclear physics and its applications, the course offers options for placements in the UK and Europe, ensuring wide-ranging career opportunities. In recent years students have undertaken placements with Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and CERN Accelerator in Switzerland.

In addition to work-based learning the Honours sandwich programme also offers you the opportunity to complete a year’s paid work experience with an industrial or scientific employer in the UK or abroad.

COURSE DETAILS

The BSc Physics with Nuclear Technology is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of physics to an advanced level. You will study core topics in physics and specialise in nuclear  technologies.

As part of your degree you will take part in practical classes which will enhance your familiarity with the principles and techniques of experimental physics. You will have flexibility in your choice of final degree title.

Guest speakers from industry also form part of the programme to further deepen your understanding of the subject and to explore potential career options.

Jobs

There is significant worldwide investment in the nuclear industry, which means job opportunities are plentiful. High demand for physics graduates – combined with your specialist knowledge in nuclear technology – enhances your employability in the nuclear energy sector, and nuclear medical imaging.

Graduates have gone on to work in roles including Nuclear Engineer, Nuclear Safety Consultant, Nuclear Waste Advisor and Radiological Consultant.

Further Study

Some graduates choose further study at MSc, MRes and PhD level. Others go on to complete a Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) to become a physics teacher at secondary school level.
