About Midwifery in University of West of Scotland

OVERVIEW

This innovative three-year MSc Midwifery course will enable you to become a highly educated midwife with the potential for management, leadership, consultancy, educational and research roles.

Within the next decade, there will be new challenges and opportunities for midwives to develop their roles as practitioners, partners and leaders in delivering and shaping future maternity services (Scottish Government, 2017). This course will give you the education and skills to embrace this challenge.

NB: you must apply through UCAS for this course as it is classed as an undergraduate Masters course - the UCAS code is B722 (see Apply section below for more details).

Professional Approval and Accreditation

Our course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You will be eligible for registration as a registered midwife with the NMC.

On completion of the programme students will be able to enter onto the NMC register and practice as a midwife

Placement Opportunities

The course comprises 50% practice and 50% theory. Practice placements are available throughout the following Health Boards:

  • NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
  • NHS Ayrshire and Arran
  • NHS Lanarkshire
  • NHS Highland
  • NHS Dumfries and Galloway

There is at least once placement outwith the acute maternity sector in a community midwifery unit.

To meet the needs of women and their families within our society, our course reflects a dynamic student centred approach to education. In preparation for autonomous practice within the maternity services with emphasis on active learning focussing on:

  • Total number of practice placement weeks in year 1: 21 weeks
  • Total number of practice placement weeks in year 2: 21 weeks
  • Total number of practice placement weeks in year 3: 25 weeks

Further Study

  • Students must have successfully completed at least one year of undergraduate study with recognized institution.
