About Advanced Computing in University of West of Scotland

OVERVIEW

Our MSc Advanced Computing course is an advanced course of study for computing graduates focusing on issues such as Internet of things (IoT) and big data. It is designed to develop your practical development skills. It will enable you to develop a comprehensive understanding of advanced computing technologies within industry and academia as well as acquire hands-on experience.

The availability of high speed internet and advancement in data processing, persisting and provisioning technologies along with miniaturization of sensing devices have opened new opportunities to utilise data to obtain a better understand of many application areas. Advanced computing technologies provide a roadmap of technological innovation across science and engineering domains. The MSc Advanced Computing is a specialist postgraduate degree focused on teaching advance topics of internet-of-things, big data and e-health.

Common modules focus on the key themes of advanced computing and on planning, analysing, developing, evaluating, deploying, and managing advanced computing systems and services for modern day organisations and businesses.

Upon successfully completing your PgDip, you can then proceed to the MSc research project / dissertation which allows you to further specialise on a topic of your choice based on your interest either in the University or, where possible, in a company. Examples of recent project topics include:

  • Predicting the impact of major events along George square on road traffic flow and other environmental factors using machine learning

COURSE DETAILS

For the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) stage, you will study the following core modules:

  • Mobile Networks and Smartphone Applications (core, 20 credits)
  • Data Mining and Visualisation (core, 20 credits)
  • Object Oriented Analysis & Design (core, 10 credits)
  • Ethics for the IT Professional (Core, 10 credits)
  • Emerging Topics in Smart Networks (core, 10 credits)
  • Research Design and Methods (core, 10 credits)

To complete the PgDip stage, you will select a further 40 credits from the following optional modules:

  • Advanced Data Science (Optional, 20 credits)
  • Advanced Wireless Networking Technologies (Optional, 20 credits)
  • eHealth and Healthcare Systems (Optional, 20 credits)
  • Intelligent Systems (Optional, 20 credits)
  • Internet of Things (Optional, 20 credits)
  • Introduction to eHealth (Optional, 20 credits)

Successful completion of the PgDip allows you to proceed to the master's module:

  • MSc Project Dissertation (60 credits)
