About Advanced Computer Systems Development in University of West of Scotland

OVERVIEW

Our accredited MSc Advanced Computer Systems Development course is ideal if you are an BSc Honours Computing degree graduate, or hold an equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline and would like to upgrade your software development and system integration skills with new technologies and trends.

The MSc has been designed with industry in mind and integrates the latest developments in computer systems analysis, design, implementation, integration and management on different devices. It has a strong focus on the practical, hands-on software development and integration skills required by industry.

You will learn software development and system integration skills with different technologies that include: UML, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Oracle, NoSQL, IBM Websphere, MS BizTalk, Java Multi-Platform and Android SDK. The course enables you to analyse a client's needs and provide IT solutions for small to large and complex systems on different devices.

Professional Recognition

Our MSC Advanced Computer Systems Development course is recognised by the British Computer Society as partially meeting the educational requirements for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) professional recognition.

Career prospects

COURSE DETAILS

Our MSc ACSD course has two parts:

  • a 120-credit taught course for a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) and
  • a 60-credit Master project for a Master degree after you complete your taught course

The core taught modules on the PgDip provide the underpinning knowledge which enables you to identify the needs of a client, analyse those needs, plan and develop a working solution. You will then go on to specialise by selecting modules from advanced topics of your choice from a wide list of options. After successfully completing the PgDip, you will undertake an individual master's project which allows you to carry out a substantive project on a topic of your interest.

  • Ethics for the IT Professional (core, 10 credits)
  • Managing Projects and Security (core, 20 credits)
  • Research Design and Methods (core, 10 credits)
  • Service Oriented Development (core, 20 credits)

To complete the PgDip stage, you will select a further 60 credits from the following optional modules:

  • Database Applications for Business (optional, 10 credits)
  • Decision Support Systems (optional, 20 credits)
  • Intelligent Systems (optional, 20 credits)
  • Interactive Design for Smart Devices (optional, 10 credits)
  • Mobile Business Technology and Design (optional, 20 credits)
  • Mobile Networks and Smartphone Applications (optional, 20 credits)
  • NoSQL Database (optional, 20 credits)
  • Oracle Database Development (optional, 20 credits)

Successful completion of the PgDip allows you to proceed to the master's module:

  • MSc Project Dissertation (60 credits)

Teaching & Assessment

Your knowledge and understanding is assessed through a combination of:

  • written examinations
  • assessed coursework
  • or coursework assignments only

Coursework assignments are also used to assess practical software development skills.

Academic qualification equivalents

  • Students must have successfully completed at least one year of undergraduate study with recognized institution.
