About Translation Studies MA in University of Portsmouth

If you're a language graduate or practising translator, you can take your skills to postgraduate level with this MA Translation Studies degree course, accredited by the European Masters in Translation (EMT) network. This is a flexible course, that you can choose to study full-time, part-time or through distance learning.

On this course, you'll learn translation skills and get the technological and theoretical knowledge you'll need for a successful career. You can study around your existing professional and personal commitments by choosing between full-time, part-time, campus-based and distance learning options.

The flexible nature of this course means that you can work towards one of the following exit awards, depending on the number of credits and length of your study:

• MA in Translation Studies (180 credits)
• Postgraduate Diploma in Translation Studies (120) credits
• Postgraduate Certificate in Translation Studies (60) credits

When you graduate, you'll be qualified to work as a translator in the UK or abroad, or to pursue further studies, such as a PhD.

You can start this course in September or January (distance learning option only).

This course is accredited by EMT, a partnership project between the European Commission and Higher Education institutions. This means it meets agreed professional standards and market demands.

The University was also a member of the OPTIMALE translator training network, funded by the Erasmus+ lifelong learning scheme of the European Commission, and is a founding member of the National Network for Translation and APTIS (Association of Programmes in Translation and Interpreting) UK and Ireland.

Academic qualification equivalents

• For entry to our Master's programmes, you will generally need to have a Bachelor's degree with at least 2nd Class Honours to be considered.

  You may be admitted to Master's programmes with a lower level degree if you have work experience relevant to the degree applied for. Find out more about Recognised Prior Learning.

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS: A  minimum of IELTS band 6.5–7.0, with no component below 6.0.
• TOEFL iBT: For most of our Master's degrees, you need a score of 91 with a minimum of:20 in Reading 19 in Listening 21 in Speaking 20 in Writing.
• PTE:  At least 61 points, with a minimum of 54 in each component
