About Social Research Mres in University of Liverpool

The MRes programme, available full-time and part-time, will give you advanced theoretical and practical training in postgraduate level research.

You’ll conduct a substantial research project, which will give you valuable experience whether you’re preparing for a career or looking for continuous professional development.

The taught programme comprises one ‘core’ (SOCR501 Introduction to Research) and one ‘optional’ module (either SOCR507 Advanced Qualitative Methods, SOCR508 Advanced Quantitative Methods) to a total of 60 credits.

The research dissertation no shorter than 25,000-30,000 words provides the remaining 150 credits (i.e. 83%) of the programme, emphasising the focus on research.

You can expect regular (at least fortnightly) supervision so this is an excellent research training opportunity, with a respected Masters qualification at the end.

Career prospects

The Social Research Methods MRes is designed to meet the needs of both pre-employment training and within-post career development. Many students pursue an academic career or a university research career in the Social Sciences (Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology) or in a related discipline. Other research graduates have developed a career in commercial research or have developed their research skills in a practical context in either the public or the private sector.

Academic qualification equivalents

• Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree from a recognised university with minimum first division (high second division from some universities).

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS:  6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.
• TOEFL iBT: 88 overall with 20-Listening, Writing, Reading, 22-Speaking.
• PTE:  62 with minimum scores of 51 in each component.
