Nuclear engineering involves the design, construction, upgrading or maintenance and eventual decommissioning of nuclear facilities from reactors to waste treatment plants and more right across the nuclear fuel cycle.
Nuclear power offers significant advantages as a stable, effective and carbon neutral energy source from power generation to submarine propulsion. Nuclear power capacity is currently expanding with about 50 nuclear power plants under construction globally with more being planned. This means that the nuclear engineering workforce needs to grow to in order to deliver these programmes and to work on other challenges from newer efficient reactor designs such as ‘portable’ small modular reactors or the ultimate goal of nuclear fusion or safer alternatives to the standard uranium fuel cycle such as thorium.
We offer a comprehensive mechanical engineering based course combined with nuclear science aimed at graduate employment across the nuclear fuel cycle. Our graduates can expect to work in nuclear engineering and other demanding safety conscious environments both nationally and internationally.

INDUSTRY LINKS
UCLan has developed strong relationships with the nuclear industry and supply chain, including Sellafield Ltd, National Nuclear Laboratory, BAE Systems at Barrow, Westinghouse, Atkins, AMEC and Studsvik.
The University of Central Lancashire has been teaching nuclear science to local employers since the 1970s. The course teaching team has jointly circa 80 years’ experience of working within the UK nuclear industries. The course is augmented by industry guest lectures and site visits (subject to facility security clearance).
PLACEMENTS
This course offers an optional Industrial Placement which comes between the second and third years and is highly recommended. This 48 week placement with a nuclear company is assessed by portfolio and contributes to the course outcomes. You are responsible for identifying and winning the placement, but the University supports this via links to industry and training in application and interview skills.
Placements are an invaluable opportunity to help consolidate your first two years learning, gain experience, and radically enhance your employability. The benefit of the experience gained during your placement is evident in improved performance in the final year of the course, and when competing for graduate jobs. We will support you in preparation for this with placement seminars during the second year.
