The course is accredited by the professional body of HR professionals, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). On successful completion of the course students will gain Associate Membership of the CIPD and provide the foundation for a career and academic development at postgraduate level. UCLan has been delivering professionally accredited programmes in HRM for many years.
Many of our staff are members of the CIPD and have worked as HR professionals. Our academics actively undertake research related to HRM topics and draw upon this to inform their teaching. The Institute for Research into Work, Organisations and Employment (IROWE) is based in UCLan’s School of Management and students have the opportunity to attend research seminars and practitioner workshops which will give them access to current research on a wide range of topics. The workshops are well attended by local HR professionals and provide a good networking opportunity for students.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT
A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.
A variety of teaching and learning approaches are utilised on the programme: lectures, seminars; workshops; practical sessions; case studies; group and team based working. You will also spend time on personal and independent study and online learning by, for example, engaging with peers in online discussion groups.
Assessment includes course work assessment and formal exams but can also take the form of role play, group and project based work, and presentations. Throughout your period of study you will build up a portfolio of your knowledge and skills as a reflective practitioner and in your final year you will have the opportunity to undertake an independent piece of research.
INDUSTRY LINKS
Staff teaching on the programme are drawn from across the Schools of Management and Business and many have relevant professional qualifications and experience, including as HR professionals and members of the CIPD. Tutors may be engaged in a range of scholarly activity such as research and writing and draw upon this in their teaching. A number of staff are involved in the Institute for Research into Organisations, Work and Employment (IROWE).
Throughout their programme of study they will also have the opportunity to attend talks and workshops on current HR practice and research run by the Institute for Research into Organisations, Work and Employment (IROWE).
We have a strong business network between local and national businesses which you will benefit from, for example, there may be an opportunity to attend guest speaker events. The companies we work with offer internships, placements, live projects and mentors to provide you with excellent practical experience. The School also offers a number of electives and options that provide students with an opportunity to gain an additional professional body qualification. Many of our academics are professionally qualified and have worked as HR professionals.

The course provides a foundation for students who wish to progress a career in the Human Resource Management profession. It will also provide a solid understanding of managing people and the work and business context for students who are progressing to more general management positions.
Progression route onto either Masters in Human Resource Management/ Development (full-time programme) or Post graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management/ Development (Part-time). Both of these are CIPD accredited at UCLan and successful completion will enable the students to work towards Chartered Membership of the CIPD.
