It combines academic study with practical hands-on training in fire service operations and covers leadership, fire risk management, fire and rescue operations, fire science, fire safety, fire investigation, human resource management, business and management practice. The modern UK Fire and Rescue Service has identified a need to recruit forward-thinking individuals, who have the potential to succeed as the managers and leaders of the future. Graduation does not provide guaranteed entry to the Fire and Rescue Service, but aims to equip the students with the skills needed to pursue a career in the fire industry.

The course is extremely popular and there are over one hundred students enrolled. A part-time option for serving officers commenced in 2011. They use the course to enhance their career development opportunities. Therefore full time students will benefit from the experience of operational firefighters. Recent course improvements include breathing apparatus, road traffic accident rescue technician training and trauma care.

The course covers leadership, fire risk management, fire and rescue operations, fire science, fire safety, fire investigation, human resource management, business and management practice. There is a theme of community safety that runs throughout. The outcome will provide the foundation for a career in local authority fire and rescue services and other fire-related industries.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

The course delivers a unique combination of theoretical science, hands-on practical and leadership skills through lectures, tutorials, seminars and practical sessions. An operational module, which is delivered in cooperation with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, will provide you with the knowledge and expertise to attend incidents as professional firefighters and include access to their internationally renowned training and fire investigation facilities.

Modules will be assessed through theory and practical examinations, and coursework. Assessed coursework will include essays, reports, practical exercises, presentations and a dissertation.

While the course doesn’t guarantee entry into the fire and rescue services, it will equip you with the knowledge and skills you’ll need to pursue a progressive career in these services. The programme has many practical aspects including a four week operational fire-fighting course; time is spent within services carrying out community fire safety education to the public. Students are encouraged to seek summer placements within supporting fire and rescue services and every effort is made to assist in this important aspect of development and service integration. International opportunities include travel and work placement with ‘Operation Florian' which is a charitable organisation working to improve fire service infrastructures in countries where they are lacking. Recent deployments have been to Zimbabwe.
