About Education Studies BA (hons) in University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN)

This course enables students to take their interest in education and learning to degree level and study educational systems and experiences from early years to lifelong learning. There is a particularly strong focus on issues relating to inclusion for diverse learners from non-traditional backgrounds such as race and ethnicity, poverty and deprivation, gender, disability and learning difficulties, sexuality, mental health, as well as those who are subject to abuse or bullying. The course is tailored to meet the interests of students who aspire to go on to teach (or develop their existing practice) with exploration into the application of learning theories, the curriculum, the role of teachers and the shared nature of learning between schools, families and professionals.

• You will undertake a placement in each year of study in an educational setting (nursery, primary, secondary or further education/training context).
• We host regular trips to destinations such as Cyprus, China, and other international locations.
• You can also gain work experience through the Centre for Volunteering and Community Leadership.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.

It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.

FURTHER INFORMATION

You will undertake at least one placement (usually one in each year of study) in an educational setting (nursery, primary, secondary or further education/training context) to help you gain essential work experience in a teaching and learning environment and facilitate reflection upon education systems, processes and practice (including your own).

For students with prior qualifications such as the Certificate in Education (post-compulsory) or relevant Foundation Degrees (in the discipline of Education or Childhood Studies/ Early Years), you can join the course in Year 2 or 3 depending on your experience and qualifications. The delivery of the course is designed with your employment needs in mind so study can usually take place with one-day-release from your workplace by negotiation with the course leader.

Scheduled teaching and learning activities combined with supported independent study will enable students to gain the ability to conduct research, learn how to make presentations, develop problem-solving skills, engage more effectively in discussions, pursue individual academic interests, collaborate in teams and develop critical approaches to policy and literature in the field of Education. You can tailor your dissertation study to particular professional needs or personal interests.

OPPORTUNITIES

You will be supported through the use of academic advisors and the University’s Careers service to undertake further study towards teacher training or postgraduate study. We have had recent success with students gaining ESRC scholarships onto Masters and Doctorate level study.

For educational professionals, we have further progression routes into an MEd, Professional Practice in Education and a Professional Doctorate in Education.

The majority of our graduates progress to careers in teaching, most commonly going on to gain places on primary PGCE courses (teacher training) or increasingly, undertaking schools-based training.
