About Computing, Bsc (hons) in University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN)

On this challenging and practical computing course, you’ll examine the application of innovative technology to solve commercial and industrial computing problems. You’ll develop essential computing skills in your first year with students on other Computing degree courses. This lets you switch between courses. The choice is up to you, and after Year 1, you choose two routes from: Networking, Business, Security, Internet and Cloud or Software Development.

  • Benefit from our 4 Week Challenge - bringing together all first years as teams to design and develop a new application, and then create a promotional marketing campaign.
  • The common first year allows you to transfer to a specialist route, for example, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Network Technology and Security or Forensic Computing and Security.
  • You can take a one-year industrial placement/study abroad after completing your second year. Most placements are UKbased, but opportunities exist for global placements.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

We emphasise practical-based learning using purpose-built laboratories. You will develop your ability to work and learn independently as you progress. Our laboratories allow you to use specialist software and to do things that would not be allowed on a public network: for example, configuring networks or database servers or testing system security. Our Joint Application Development Lab allows the recording and evaluation of meetings to help develop interpersonal skills. Where possible, we make software available for your own PC. You will use an online learning environment that supports flexible learning by providing additional, resource-rich, online materials.

The course is assessed using individual coursework assignments, group work, presentations and exams, which may be seen or unseen. There is a practical emphasis with the main contribution to your degree classification coming from coursework.

OPPORTUNITIES

You can take a one-year industrial placement after completing your second year/third year if on Foundation entry. Most placements are UK-based, but we regularly place students in English-speaking workplaces elsewhere in Europe. It is possible to study a year of the course at a university abroad.

UCLan's Computing degree develops your technical, business and people-oriented skills to produce a multi-skilled graduate capable of succeeding in a variety of careers. Depending on your choice of routes, a range of careers is possible including: analysing clients' business requirements and specifying appropriate IT systems, designing and managing networks or developing multimedia, databases or high performance software.

A broad skills base will allow you to pursue a range of careers without specialist entry requirements. One of our graduates is working for NATO. Others are working in local industry for organisations such as BAE. Several other graduates have gone on to teach in primary, secondary, further and higher education.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

This Computing degree course has CITP (Certified Information Technology Professional) accreditation leading to professional membership of the BCS and partial CEng accreditation from the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.
