FURTHER INFORMATION

The course is intended to provide the opportunity to gain a degree and additional valuable experience to enable graduates to have a good chance of entering the motor sports industry. It has been developed as a direct result of the need for professionals within the motor sports industry and satisfies the requirements of an Engineering Council Institution.

The MEng is a four year course (five year if on Foundation entry), plus an extra year if an industrial placement is included. Satisfactory completion of an industrial placement leads to the award: MEng (Honours) CAE with Industrial Placement.

Studies provide the core knowledge and skills essential to a thorough understanding of engineering processes and include: manufacturing engineering; electronics; mechanics; engineering drawing; and analytical methods. Subsequently, competence is further developed by taking more specialised CAE modules in computer-aided design, finite element analysis and simulation. Final year projects encourage detailed exploration of your own specific areas of interest.

Our close links with industry mean everything you’ll learn reflects current best practice - especially as you’ll be taught by staff with successful careers in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Areas of Expertise include:

Engineering Design & Manufacture, 2D & 3D CAD/Drafting with AutoCAD - CAD/CAM with Alphacam, 3D CAD Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, 3D Studio Max, Engineering Simulation - FEA, Motion Analysis, Fluid Dynamics, Advanced Composites Design and Manufacture, Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Materials Technology.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

We use lectures and applications based learning through assignments and design briefs. You will use a substantial student workshop for the module in manufacturing as well as traditional lecture rooms for other modules. In recent years, the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences has moved into a brand new building with impressive computer facilities and specialist labs.

You’ll have the opportunity to join the Innovation Club and work with a diverse group of students and staff on innovative projects.

Assessment is done using formal examinations and coursework. As the course progresses less emphasis is given to assessment by examination and more to coursework.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The quality of this course has been recognised with accreditation to Chartered Engineer status by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering Design, for fully meeting education requirement for Chartered Engineer status (CEng).
