This ground breaking course is the first of its kind in the UK. The course gives students the opportunity to train both as a dental technician and a clinical dental technician who can work within dental technology and primary care dentistry. Primary care dentistry is delivered by the whole team in which the role of the clinical dental technician is an increasingly important part. The structure of the course is exciting and innovative in that the dental technology and the clinical training are fully integrated. The course is also integrated with the BDS and dental therapy courses. The clinical dental technology students study alongside the dental and therapy students and share common modules. The school is already renowned for the depth of clinical experience its current students gain during their training.
The first two years of the course will involve training in our on-site dental laboratory and patient contact will be in our purpose built UCLan Dental Clinic. Technical and clinical team skills are reinforced in Year 2 and in Year 3 when students will have the opportunity to gain experience alongside the BDS students at one of our Dental Education Centres.
The course, subject to General Dental Council (GDC) approval, will allow the graduates to register with the GDC as a Clinical Dental Technician.
FURTHER INFORMATION
As a UCLan Clinical Dental technology student you will learn technical skills in our dedicated teaching dental laboratory and clinical skills in our adjacent dental clinic.
We employ a number of teaching methods to teach you the various aspects of clinical dental technology. There is a great emphasis on clinical experience to develop clinical skills, initially by working on manikins in the dental clinic. Working with actors assists in the development of communication skills. Knowledge is developed by traditional lectures and tutorials as well as Problem Based Learning (PBL) where you work together to develop an integrated knowledge of how the body functions in Health and Disease. We use a variety of methods for assessment such as short answer, single best item and short note questions.
In the first two years of the programme, you are based in the Dental School at Preston. The course focuses on developing clinical skills and supporting knowledge as well as being a professional. In Year 2 you will have the opportunity to work alongside dental students producing the technical work for patients in the Dental Education Centres. In Year 3 you begin treating your own patients in the Dental Clinic at UCLan and will be responsible for both the clinical and technical work for these patients. UCLan and the DECs are linked via IT for learning and teaching, with individual student access to the relevant intranets.
