About Business Data Analytics Bsc (hons) in De Montfort University

Learn how to become a specialist who can manage and interpret data from business information technology systems. 

Every day organisations accumulate huge volumes of data from a variety of sources for their business systems. These systems vary from customer support, NHS records and critical financial planning, to strategic marketing systems for international retail groups. 

We’ll support you in becoming experienced in the use of industry-standard business analytics and business intelligence software SAS, helping you to positively contribute and lead companies in improving their business intelligence. 

There is an increasing demand in industry for skilled specialists who can manage and interpret data from business information technology systems. The combination of computing skills and business knowledge taught on this course enables you to enter a diverse range of careers, such as business analyst, analytics consultant, statistical programmer, statistical analyst, SAS programmer, data management analyst and research analyst.

Our computer science and engineering and technology subjects have been scored highly in the Times Higher Education’s 2020 World University Rankings. Out-performing our inaugural ranking in 2019, computer science – which includes subjects such as artificial intelligence, cyber security and information systems – is ranked 24th overall out of UK universities.

Modules such as Information Systems Development will give you a practical, integrated overview of the information systems development process, from project selection and inception, through to capturing user requirements and designing and producing a simple prototype system.

Our Business Intelligence module will also give you the opportunity to understand the business process model of organisations and why key business processes need supporting through effective data capture, conversion and information output.

• 100% of our Computing for Business graduates from summer 2017 are in work or further study after graduating, according to the latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education report (2016-17).
• You’ll be able to gain an industry-recognised qualification and a skillset that are sought by employers across the industry. Study towards a recognised qualification such as PRINCE2 Project Management and Information Technology Information Library, commonly known as ITIL, and become experienced in the use of industry-standard business analytics and business intelligence software SAS.
• We have more than 50 years of computing experience that you can learn from. This long-standing history allows you to draw on a wealth of research and academic expertise to inform your studies. Computer science and informatics research at DMU was ranked third for its research power among modern UK universities in the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014), which is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.
• Our computer science and engineering and technology subjects have been scored highly in the Times Higher Education’s 2020 World University Rankings, meaning you can benefit from the outstanding level of research, teaching and learning on offer at DMU.
• Enhance your employability and gain industry experience by undertaking an optional work placement. Previous students have benefited from placements at leading organisations including at Hewlett-Packard, Intel Corporation, Thomson Reuters, E.ON, GlaxoSmithKline, TNT Express, and AstraZeneca.
• Develop your practical skills in our specialist facilities. Once back on campus, you’ll have access to 100 computer workstations, which are divided into five interconnected laboratories, each with 20 high-specification PCs running Windows/Linux.
• Enjoy an international experience with DMU Global, which can enrich your studies and expand your cultural horizons. Previous DMU Global trips have included New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, China, Canada, Japan, South Africa, Russia and Italy.

• Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Mathematics  or equivalent, plus one of the following:
• Normally 104 UCAS points from at least two A-levels or equivalent or
• BTEC National Diploma/ Extended Diploma at DMM or
• Pass in the QAA accredited Access to HE. English and Mathematics  GCSE required as a separate qualification as equivalency is not accepted within the Access qualification. We will normally require students to have had a break from full-time education before undertaking the Access course or
• International Baccalaureate: 24+ points
• Foundation Year in Computing: Pass Foundation, and progression is at the discretion of the programme leader. Refer to the Foundation team for further guidance. 

English language

If English is not your first language then an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component (or equivalent) is essential.

English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.
