Coventry University has been providing social work CPD (Continuous Professional Development) courses and modules to local employers for many years and has prominent links with nearby local authorities and voluntary sector organisations.
The PgC Advanced Adult Social Work has been designed to build on these established provisions and facilitate the development of experienced and expert practitioners in social work.
Why Coventry University?
An award-winning university, we are committed to providing our students with the best possible experience. We continue to invest in both our facilities and our innovative approach to education. Our students benefit from industry-relevant teaching, and resources and support designed to help them succeed. These range from our modern library and computing facilities to dedicated careers advice and our impressive Students’ Union activities.
Course information
This course aims to enable social workers to develop their careers from early social work practice through to teaching, mentoring and assessing others.
The course is designed for social workers who have completed social work pre-registration training and are in employment to enhance your career prospects via gaining a PG level qualification. Opportunities are also available within the faculty to progress your studies beyond the PgC to a full master’s degree (conditions may apply).
The provision of CPD has become part of a work stream within the recently formed South Midlands Social Work Shadow Teaching Partnership. The purpose of the collaboration is to raise standards to ensure that pre- and post-qualifying social work education, placement provision and continuous professional development of qualified practitioners is of a high quality and serves the interests of both employers and academic institutions to train and develop social workers to deliver the best possible services to service users.
Career prospects
All students on the course will already be in employment as qualified social workers. However, the course embeds enhanced employability through a variety of initiatives such as the further development of transferable skills (e.g., communication and assessment skills, leadership and mentoring skills). These skills develop the qualities needed for employment in circumstances requiring sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative in complex and unpredictable professional environments.
You will also have access to Careers, and the Employability Support Team and can be supported with writing CVs, job applications, etc. Evidence indicates that students often go on to become supervisors and first line managers of social work teams having completed similar courses.
All applicants will normally have two years post qualification in order to comply with the requirements of the Practice Educator Professional Standards.
Applicants to the PgC Practice Education will be required to supervise a social work student/learner for modules 7000SW Mentoring, Supervision and Assessment in Practice.
Accreditation for prior learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning AP(E)L is in accordance with University regulations as set out in paragraph 7b.3.2 and 7b.3.3 of the regulations for taught postgraduate courses.
English as a Foreign Language: This course requires IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5. Pre-sessional English is available if required.
Our International Student Hub offers information on entry requirements for your country, as well as contact details for agents and representatives should you need more advice.
