About Education By Research in Canterbury Christ Church University

Why the Masters in Education by Research?

The Masters in Education by Research will allow you to focus on a particular subject of research expertise and will prepare you for professional work or further study. Many students complete a Masters in Education by Research before they commit to a full PhD.

You will complete a research project in your chosen subject area over the course of one year (full-time) or two years (part-time).

To support your independent study, there are research methods sessions run by the Graduate School throughout the year, and you will also be invited to research theme group meetings and events that are held within the Faculty of Education.  It is possible to complete the MA by Research either part ­time (two years) or full ­time (one year).

What will i study?

The MA in Education by Research will allow you to specialise in an area (pathway) in which you are particularly interested.

The areas of study you can choose to undertake your research in are:

• Physical Education and Physical Acitvity;
• Counselling and Guidance;
• Early Childhood;
• Special Education Needs and Inclusion;
• Educational Leadership;
• Global and International Education;
• Learning and Teaching.

Previous student studies have included:

• An investigation into place meanings of recreational climbers at an indoor rock climbing venue.
• What is the impact of wellbeing on the physical activities of occupational therapy for a child with dyspraxia? 
• Negotiating Sexuality within a Female University Football Team: A qualitative study
• The effective use of competition as a pedagogical tool to develop confidence and competence in physical education lessons at primary school.
• What does competition mean to children and how can we prepare and ensure that they enjoy competitive sport?

What can i do next?

The programme leads to the award of an MA in Education by Research, which is a significant qualification in its own right, but you could also continue ultimately on to PhD or EdD programmes. The research and writing skills you will gain, and the expert knowledge you will develop in your research area, will enhance your employability and can provide invaluable grounding for continuing and extending your careers in subject area.

Academic qualification equivalents:

• Bachelor of Arts/Science/Commerce degree of at least 3 years duration or Professional Degree (4 years+)

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS       :         6.5 or equivalent, with no less than 6.0 in Writing and no less than 5.5 in Reading, Speaking and Listening.
• TOEFL     :         minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening.
• PTE          :         overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50

• The weekly living cost for an international student staying at a residential hall/flat/homestay is 384.50 NZD, 305.75 NZD, and 360 NZD, respectively.
