About BA (hons)counselling in Bishop Grosseteste University

This programme is aimed at students who wish to become Counselling practitioners. The degree adopts an humanistic approach to counselling practice with an emphasis on embedding knowledge of integrating elements of the major theoretical approaches and counselling methodologies.

Students develop theoretical knowledge, counselling skills and experience, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, research skills and critical awareness. Students will be introduced to the relevance and practical application of knowledge and counselling skills through practical learning, placement and research opportunities.

Counselling is often perceived as an expensive profession to enter due to the additional costs incurred by students during training and these can often act as a barrier for students pursuing training and careers in the field. As an institution Bishop Grosseteste University has a long history of enabling and supporting students from diverse backgrounds in starting on their future career paths and therefore when undertaking their supervised clinical practice experience (i.e counselling placement hours) students who are accepted on the BA (Hons) Counselling programme will have the additional costs of their clinical practice supervision paid for them by University.

By the end of a Counselling course at BGU you will be ready to successfully complete further study to become a professional counsellor. You will also be equipped for a range of graduate employment in other career areas, including Psychology, Sociology and Health and Social Care.

You will normally need 96-112 UCAS tariff points (from a maximum of four Advanced Level qualifications). We welcome a range of qualifications that meet this requirement, such as A/AS Levels, BTEC, Access Courses, International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge Pre-U, Extended Project etc.
