About Bachelor Of Applied Management (hr Management Major) in Southern Institute of Technology

The Bachelor of Applied Management programme of study aims to produce graduates with the personal and professional skills necessary to be successful in demanding and evolving business environments, whether locally, nationally or internationally.

The programme offers a blend of theoretical and practical learning, with an emphasis on applied knowledge and skill. High importance is placed on the development of the soft skills for management (such as communication, business writing, presentation, interpersonal and problem solving skills) in addition to the development of specific business knowledge and skills.

Career Opportunities

At the completion of the programme, students will:

• Demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to the various areas of applied management, including key ideas, principles, and concepts associated with the theory and application of papers;
• Be confident, capable, and professional practitioners and learners;
• Gather and assess information form a variety of sources, undertake analysis of this data, and use this to solve problems;
• Be able to think critically, analyse relevant issues, and discuss these within the context of management in a logical and competent manner;
• Understand, apply, and communicate principles and concepts within the applicable management sector; and
• Have developed professional knowledge and applied skills appropriate for the needs of clients within the applicable management sector.

Human Resource Management major

In addition to the skills listed for the overall programme, graduates from the Bachelor of Applied Management with a major in Human Resource Management, will strategically analyse information relevant to human resource areas including recruiting, organisational departmental planning, performance management, and employment compliance. Graduates will employ reflective practice techniques to develop and implement appropriate human resource management organisational policies and procedures.

Educational Pathways

Further educational opportunities for graduates may include enrolling in postgraduate study, for example the SIT Postgraduate Diploma in Business Enterprise.

Employment Pathways

Graduates will be qualified to work in a range of employment sectors, from small to medium enterprises (SMEs), through to engagement in human resource departments in larger, more complex, enterprises.

Prospective students for the programme must meet at least one of the application and selection criteria below:

School Leavers

University Entrance – NCEA Level 3

Three subjects – at Level 3, made up of:

• 14 credits each, in three NZQA University Entrance approved subjects, and
• Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of five credits in reading and five credits in writing, and
• Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of specified achievement standards through a range of subjects, or package of all three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627).

Mature Applicants

Be at least 20 years of age when the programme begins, and provide evidence of aptitude or appropriate work experience.

Completion of an external or overseas qualifications, which is considered to be the equivalent of any of the above qualifications, as approved by the Head of Faculty.

Each year of study must be successfully completed before moving on to the next year of the programme.

All prerequisites must be met for individual papers.

Language Requirements

Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below:

• IELTS test – Academic score of 6, with no band score lower than 5.5
• TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) – Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
• TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) – Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)
• University of Cambridge English Examinations – FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
• NZCEL – a) expiring b) current; a) Level 4 (Academic) b) Level 4 (Academic)
• Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PtoE (Academic) score of 50
• City & Guilds IESOL – B2 Communicator with a score of 66
• LanguageCert – C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS

An NZQA approved English Language proficiency test, where the student has achieved an outcome that is equivalent or better than those scores listed for Internationally recognised English language proficiency tests above in relation to the level of intended programme of study, or

Completion of all primary education and at least three years secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction, or

Completion of five years of secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction.

Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate below 80 per cent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English must provide evidence that they:

1. Achieved NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand University Entrance requirements, or
2. Been awarded a Bachelor Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours Degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master Degree or Doctoral Degree with English as the language of instruction, from tertiary education providers from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States, or
3. Been awarded the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, CELTA, or
4. Have achieved one of the English Language competence tests specified above within the two years preceding the proposed date of enrolment.

New Zealand Living Expenses

You'll require between $20,000 and $25,000 a year ($380–480 per week) for housing/rent, food, transportation, phone bills, internet usage, and entertainment, in addition to your tuition and insurance fees. The average living expense will be the same for everyone, regardless of their tuition or course price. Please keep in mind that these are only suggestions; the Immigration New Zealand requirement is $15,000 per year including return travel or an additional $2,000.
