Description

Psychology is the scientific study of human mental life and behaviour. It involves areas such as Brain and Behaviour, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Psychological Research Methods. The degree covers all the major theories of psychology, as well as research methods and statistics for psychological data analysis.

• Students graduate with a Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) accredited degree.
• You will study Psychology along with two Arts subjects in first year, concentrating on Psychology only in second and third year.
• You will study the human mind and behaviours with the rigours of scientific testing.
• You will use research methods including observation, measurement, hypothesis testing, experimentation, logical inference and statistical analysis.
• If your ambition is to have a career as a professional psychologist, you will be interested in the variety of career paths are available, both within and outside psychology that an accredited Psychology degree opens up.

Course Structure

1st year

• Psychology plus 2 Arts subjects (or Critical Skills) in 1st year – choose from groups 1, 3, 4, 5 (maximum one per group)

2nd & 3rd year

• You will concentrate on Psychology in 2nd and 3rd year 
• At the end of 1st year, students who do not wish to continue with MH106 have the option of continuing in MH101 with their other 2 Arts subjects, or with Psychological Studies and another subject as a Double Major

Students may apply to study overseas after 2nd year (on Erasmus or Study Abroad) and graduate with a BA (International) after 4 years. See the International Studies website for details.

Career Options

The BA Psychology is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland. For those who wish to become professional psychologists, the undergraduate degree is only the first stage in professional training that will require an additional two to six years of study and supervised experience.

A variety of career paths are available, both within and outside psychology: if your ambition is a career as a professional psychologist, an undergraduate degree is the first stage in professional training that will require an additional two to six years of study and supervised experience.

• Clinical Psychologists - working in healthcare settings
• Educational Psychologists - working in schools
• Organisational Psychologists - working in business and work settings

Academic qualification equivalents

• Minimum 75% in the Higher Secondary School Certificate- Standard 12 awarded through the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or the India Council for School Examinations (ICSE), or any equivalent Standard 12 All India Secondary School Certificate

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS      :    6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.00 in each band.
• TOEFL    :    92
• PTE         :    59
