About Practical Nurse in Norquest Collage

Overview

One of the largest in Canada, NorQuest College’s Practical Nurse program will prepare you to play a vital, frontline role in providing high-quality care to clients in a variety of health-care settings.

Student Success

Students are more likely to be successful in this program if they:

• are physically and emotionally able to manage workplace demands
• have access to a vehicle to travel to complete their clinical practice
• have access to a computer and internet, and basic computer skills
• are able to demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour

Applicants are requested to assess their ability to fulfill the demands of the occupation of practical nurse. As a practical nurse, you must be able to:

• work shifts and weekends
• be on your feet for extended periods of time
• use your knees, back, and arms to move clients who have minimal body strength
• function effectively in stressful situations
• perform all skills independently

Students are required to travel to various locations in order to complete their clinical practice. Within the time frame of the program, every effort is made to accommodate students in clinical practice placements. Access to a vehicle may be required.

Career Potential

Practical nurses find jobs in acute care hospitals, continuing care centres, community care settings, client homes, clinics, or doctors' offices.

Further Education Opportunities

Students who complete the Practical Nurse program and are actively registered with a college for practical nurses may qualify for the following programs at NorQuest College:

• Addictions Recovery Practitioner
• Advanced Education in Orthopaedics for LPNs
• Mental Health Recovery Practitioner

Practical Nurse graduates can also further enhance their education through our health continuing education courses.

Academic qualification equivalents

• 65% in Mathematics 20-1 or Mathematics 20-2 or equivalent, or 50% in Mathematics 30-1 or Mathematics 30-2 or equivalent

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS      :       Academic: 6; no section score below 5.5
• TOEFL    :       71

Application deadline: The international students whose study plans have been affected by COVID-19 can start their studies from Fall 2020 to Winter 2021 within the same program. The deferral deadline is July 15, 2020.

Students with english not as a first language must submit one of the following scores as proof of english proficiency:

Students not having minimum scores for demonstrating english proficiency can enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) program by Norquest. Minimum score in Norquest’s ESL for admission eligibility varies with program.
