About Social Work Diploma in Mount Royal University

Social Work is a two-year diploma program that combines knowledge and skills in social work, humanities and behavioural sciences. The program prepares you for exceptional social work practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. Graduates are employed in a broad range of government (public), non-profit and private agencies. Social Work Diploma graduates are eligible to apply to become registered social workers in Alberta.

Theory into action

Starting in your first year, you'll gain extensive hands-on experience working with diverse populations, including individuals and families living in low-income households, high-risk families, recent immigrants, the elderly, young offenders and others.

Experience wantedGain knowledge and practice in a variety of social work skills, including:

• assessing needs and strengths
• goal setting and planning
• developing intervention plans
• intervening effectively with persons of varying ages, races, genders and abilities
• supportive counselling
• evaluation practice and/or programs

Career choicesGraduates may be employed in a range of government, non-profit and private agencies. The demand for graduates is high and continues to grow. In Alberta, the job market for social workers is expected to increase by three to four percent a year. Your job title could be:

• Probation/Corrections officer

Academic qualification equivalents

• Applicants must have a minimum overall average of 65 percent in high school courses

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS      :       6.5 (min. 5.0 on each band).
• TOEFL    :       83 (min. 20 in each of four sections)
• PTE         :       58 (min. 55 in each area)
