Acupuncture is a health practice and component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complete health care system approach to treating and preventing disease. Practiced for thousands of years, acupuncture has gained more attention as an alternative and complementary treatment choice in western culture, creating excellent career opportunities. In addition to acupuncture, TCM also includes Chinese herbology, diet therapy, tuina, and specific exercises such as tai chi and qigong.
Provincial Registration
MacEwan University's Acupuncture program prepares you to become a Registered Acupuncturist in Alberta, subject to successful completion of the Pan-Canadian and provincial registration examinations administered by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAAA). Our curriculum is based on the latest national and international standards of competency, ensuring that your skills and knowledge are global. MacEwan University’s Acupuncture program serves as the benchmark for registration in Alberta, and we are proud to be the only public, post-secondary program of this kind approved by Alberta Advanced Education.
Acupuncture in Practice
Acupuncturists work with the body’s energy that flows along well-defined pathways called meridians. Disease and health disorders are viewed as an imbalance of energy. Acupuncturists aim to prevent or treat illness by inserting very thin needles at specific points along the body’s various meridians, normalizing the energy flow.
Modern scientific study has confirmed that Acupuncture induces biochemical changes in the body that have beneficial effects and can facilitate healing.
Acupuncture Teaching Clinic
MacEwan’s Acupuncture teaching clinic is open to the public. Under the supervision of the clinical supervisor, MacEwan’s Acupuncture program students put theory to practice by providing treatments for a variety of health benefits.
Careers
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine practice continue to grow in popularity. Today, acupuncture is a regulated health profession in Alberta, and is a popular alternative and complementary treatment choice for acute and chronic illness.
