What you will study

The program consists of four courses, one core course in pathophysiology and health assessment, which forms the basis of specialist practice. The remaining three courses give you the option of specialising in one of eight areas including:

• Acute Care (medical/surgical)
• Emergency
• Critical Care
• Mental Health
• Public Health
• Older Person Care
• Perinatal, Infant, Child and Youth Mental Health
• Paediatric Child Health Care

Within the program are core and advanced clinical competencies that are based on the standards of practice published by the respective colleges, e.g. College of Emergency Nursing Australia (CENA).

The University of Newcastle Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing will qualify you to work independently and collaboratively with a range of other health professionals, in a variety of clinical settings. With an increasing demand for qualified and experienced people in nursing, long term employment and career progression is possible.

Upon the successful completion of the Graduate Certificate, you will be qualified to work as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. You will also be eligible to gain entry into a number of Master programs, including the Master of Nursing, where you can continue in your chosen speciality.

Academic qualification equivalents

Students are required to have a completed bachelor degree in a relevant discipline.

English language requirements (one of the below):

• TOEFL : 79 Overall score between 79-93 with the following scores in each band-

• Reading= 13-18
• Listening= 12-19
• Speaking= 18-19
• Writing= 21-23

• IELTS : 6.5 With minimum of 6.0 in each band

The University of Newcastle expects all students to fulfill these test score requirements, including students whose first language is English or have studied in an educational institution whose language of instruction is English for at least 4 years. These tests are conducted to provide a structural base so that there is no hindrance to cope with the syllabi.
