About Bachelor Of Humanitarian And Community Studies (bhcs) in Charles Darwin University

The Bachelor of Humanitarian and Community Studies develops your skills to understand, critically analyze and apply concepts of community development and international humanitarian assistance. This course focuses specifically on working with indigenous and non-indigenous communities in urban and resource-poor environments.

The course is delivered by academics and experienced practitioners. Interdisciplinary course units provide you with knowledge in:

You will also complete two practice placements in your second and third year where you will acquire hands-on skills and knowledge in the fields of humanitarian practice and community development.

Professional Recognition

The course is accredited by the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA). Graduates will be eligible to apply for membership upon course completion.

Course Structure

This 240 credit point course consists of two common, sixteen core, three specialist and two general elective units. They include units in communication skills, human service delivery, project management, research methods, humanitarian practice, indigenous knowledge and community development.

In the second year of the program, students attend a two-week humanitarian intensive unit at CDU's Casuarina campus. The unit comprises lectures and guest presentations on the international humanitarian aid system and humanitarian practice. Other topics covered include the United Nations system, international law, humanitarian principles, standards and ethics. Students will also participate in hands-on activities during a simulated disaster response event, allowing them to gain practical skills and knowledge relevant to working in the field of international humanitarian assistance. The unit includes field trips and provides opportunities to network with the industry.

In the third year of the program, students undertake a 50-day placement in urban, regional or remote Australia or overseas. The placement is organised by the students and must be completed with a national, regional or international community-based, humanitarian or development aid agency. This placement aims to expose students to the professional environment of the placement agency's field of practice. Overseas placements are available in countries including Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

The minimum academic entry requirements for admissions to undergraduate degree is the completion of a qualification deemed equivalent to Australian Year 12 by the University's qualification assessment references. Applicants may also be required to satisfy specific course requirements such as a minimum overall grade score or prerequisite knowledge.

IELTS Academic Module - A minimum overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0; Australian Technology and Management College (ATMC) - Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Students will be required to sit an exit test on completion and achieve a score equivalent to IELTS overall 6.0;

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) - A minimum overall score of 169 with no skill below 169; Common European Framework Certificate of English Proficiency - A minimum overall grade of B2. Navitas Academic English - A minimum overall pass and 55% in Academic English 3;

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic module - A minimum overall score of 50 with no score lower than 50;

TOEFL Internet based Test (iBT) - A minimum overall score of 60 and a minimum writing score of 21.
