As an environmental scientist, you will be the guardian of our ecosystem. You will have the skills and knowledge to educate your community about the effects of human impact, and work towards minimizing further problems.

Your academic studies will be combined with practical experience so you can play an active role the protection and conservation of the environment. Foundation knowledge including biology, ecology and spatial analysis will be the base from which you learn to solve complex environmental problems. You will explore human-impact, social and cultural perspectives, identify solutions to environmental challenges, and learn how to effectively communicate information for positive environmental outcomes. Training in critical and systems thinking will empower you to tackle the environmental challenges of our time.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Environmental Science includes common and core foundation units completed mainly in the first year that provide you with a grounding in biology, ecology, earth systems and an introduction to current national and global environmental issues.

Students can then elect to focus on terrestrial or aquatic ecology and ecosystems management, biodiversity and conservation, cultural perspectives or landscape ecology and remote environmental monitoring. These areas can become majors in your course of study. Specialist electives include exciting field intensives that offer on-the-ground experience within the spectacular environments of northern and central Australia and the Asian-Pacific region. There are also three free elective units which provide additional flexibility and choice.

A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 240 credit points (cp). All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.

External: This course is available online through distance education with some on-campus attendance requirements.

The minimum academic entry requirements for admissions to undergraduate degree is the completion of a qualification deemed equivalent to Australian Year 12 by the University's qualification assessment references. Applicants may also be required to satisfy specific course requirements such as a minimum overall grade score or prerequisite knowledge.

IELTS Academic Module - A minimum overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0; Australian Technology and Management College (ATMC) - Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Students will be required to sit an exit test on completion and achieve a score equivalent to IELTS overall 6.0; Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) - A minimum overall score of 169 with no skill below 169; Common European Framework Certificate of English Proficiency - A minimum overall grade of B2; Navitas Academic English - A minimum overall pass and 55% in Academic English; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic module - A minimum overall score of 50 with no score lower than 50; TOEFL Internet based Test (iBT) - A minimum overall score of 60 and a minimum writing score of 21.
