The Institution of California, Irvine, founded in 1965, is an open research university that is the city's second largest employer. The AAU and APR Universities are affiliated with UCI. It was one of the first universities to join the American Association of Universities. The university is regarded as one of the best in the country for providing high-quality education. Furthermore, the Irvine Medical Centre in Orange County is run by the University of California. In the city, the medical centre is a well-known hospital.

The university's main campus is planned to include the largest open spaces and trees grown all around it. It is close to the city's famed Aldrich Park, which is one of the city's most popular attractions. It was then taken over by the university, who planned to build a new campus known as Central Park. The campus is home to a variety of undergraduate schools. It offers its students a serene study atmosphere.

The centre campus includes study areas, athletic fields, and vast event grounds. Gene Uematsu, a Japanese architect, designed and built this campus. It covers 1,500 acres of land and has over 200 structures. In addition, the library houses extensive holdings in the fields of the performing arts, history, Chinese theory, and a large number of Japanese research papers.

About 88 undergraduate degree programmes, 82 postgraduate degree programmes, and 50 doctoral degree programmes are available at the university. According to a report from 2019, the institution has 37, 629 students. The academic organisation is divided into 13 schools and encompasses a variety of courses.
