Ulster University is Northern Ireland’s innovative university, recognised both nationally and internationally. It is home to approximately 27,000 students coming in from over 100 countries. Ulster has four campuses across the Northern Ireland - Belfast, Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee. The university believes in making higher education accessible for all students.

Students at Ulster have access to some of the best teaching and learning facilities. They can choose to study undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes in the following faculties:

Its business school is one of the largest in the UK and Ireland, with approximately 6,000 students. Ulster is also considered to be a leading university for sport in Ireland and the UK. The university has made a considerable investment in its major facilities across all campuses – an investment worth GBP 250 million in the Belfast campus represents a major transformation.

Ulster’s career-oriented programmes prepare its graduates for the job market and help them embrace challenges. 94% of the university’s graduates move on to work or further study within six months of graduating.

Students at Ulster receive great benefits in relation to academic support and counselling on their health and wellbeing. Accommodation is guaranteed for international students and available on all of the university’s four campuses. They can also access various sports facilities on campus and be part of a wider community of sport enthusiasts. Ulster’s Students’ Union offers numerous avenues through different clubs and volunteering programmes for students to engage with the multi-cultural community.

The university does offer financial support for international students looking to study in the UK. However, only a limited number of scholarships are available for international candidates for which they need to apply for at the time of application for admission. The scholarship amount is adjusted in the university bill and the final bill is handed over to the student.

Here are few of the Scholarships offered to International students:

  1. The International Undergraduate Scholarship: Is awarded to all fresh incoming international (non-EU) students in the first year of a full-time undergraduate course delivered on one of the Northern Ireland campuses of the university.
  2. GREAT Scholarships 2020: It is a scholarship aiming at easing the finances of students from China, Malaysia and Indonesia wishing to study at postgraduate level.
  3. The International Postgraduate Scholarship: Is awarded to all fresh incoming international (non-EU) students on a full-time postgraduate course delivered on one of the Northern Ireland campuses of the university.
  4. The John J. Sweeney Scholarship: Named after AFL-CIO President Emeritus John J. Sweeney, a person who dedicated his life to advancing the well-being of working people, making outstanding contributions to working people both in the US and internationally which will live on for years to come. The scholarship awards USD 20,000 to the Scholar’s tuition fees for an MA or MSc at Ulster University.

Entry requirements

English language requirements

If English is not the applicant’s first language, they must be able to demonstrate that their English language competency is of a standard suitable for succeeding in the chosen course of study. Applicants will be required to provide an English language proficiency test, which must be no more than two years old by the time of commencing studies.

Most courses require the following:

  • A minimum of IELTS 6.0 (with no contributing band less than 5.5).
  • If the applicant’s English language proficiency does not meet requirements, the Centre for English Language Teaching offers a range of English language courses, which are designed to prepare international students with the necessary language skills for academic study at Ulster University.
  • Ulster has its own internal online English test. Ulster’s Admissions Team can arrange this for students for free when they apply.

Undergraduate programmes

Students can apply directly for free online or via UCAS. If applying directly, they will receive an offer within 48 hours.

Postgraduate programmes

Students can apply directly online.

As part of the online application, applicants are required to upload key documentation including transcripts from university-level study and a personal statement. Ulster does not charge an application fee.
