The University of Edinburgh Highlights

College Info

The Institution of Edinburgh is regarded as the sixth-oldest university in Scotland, having been founded in 1582. The institution is public. The University of Edinburgh was first known as Tounis College and later changed its name in 1583. The university also had its inaugural classes that year. The institution was established as a Royal Charter university, the fourth in Scottish history. It rose to become Scotland's top open institution by the 18th century. A medical school was established on the property in 1875, and the medical buildings' halls were built with the help of significant contributions from William McEwan, a well-known politician at the time. The architect Anderson created the building and erected it.

The institution has five campuses: Central Area, Western General, Easter Bush, King's Building, and BioQuarter. The oldest campus is in the Central area, which also houses the main library, the School of Social Science and Humanities, the School of Computing and Informatics, and the School of Law. Every year, this campus also hosts the Edinburgh International Festival. The engineering and scientific research centres are located on the King's building campus. Along with the Darwin Library, James Clerk Maxwell Library, and Robertson Engineering and Science Library, it also has the Centre for Systems Biology. The National e-Science Centre, Scottish Microelectronic Centre, Scottish Institute for Enterprises, and Environmental Scientific Centre are just a few of the prominent research institutions that call it home.

Additionally, the BioQuater Campus has research centres and medical schools. A medical library and two sizable lecture halls are also on this site. One of the primary teaching hospitals connected to the Medical School at the University of Edinburgh is The Western General. It is situated five miles from BioQuarter and two miles from the university's Central Area. Eight miles south of the Edinburgh city centre, close to Penicuik, is where you'll find the Easter Bush Campus. The Roslin Institute and The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies are also included.

The university offers a variety of subjects organised into three colleges, giving students the chance to select the courses according to their interests. Humanities, arts, and social sciences, veterinary medicine, and the college of science and engineering are the categories. A notable member of the Russell Group, Coimbra Group, and LER Universities is the University of Edinburgh. Students get wonderful possibilities to collaborate with experts in the industry and learn from their experiences firsthand. Along with the instructors, they are taken on trips to businesses. Additionally, the university's library is regarded as Scotland's biggest library and has a collection of up to 2.5 million volumes and journals. A total of 7,000 book and chapter records are added annually, and there are over 2,800 articles that are frequently indexed.

Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, Justin Trudeau, the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, Tony Hayward, the former CEO of BP, Piers Sellers, a renowned astronaut, Ian Charleson, a well-known actor, and Irina Bokova are all alumni of the University of Edinburgh (9th Director-General of UNESCO).
