The Coventry College of Design, established in 1843, served as the foundation for Coventry University. It was given a new name—Coventry College of Art—after combining with Rugby College of Engineering Technology, Lanchester College of Technology, and Lanchester College of Technology. The resulting organisation was initially known as Lanchester Polytechnic, then changing its name to Coventry Polytechnic, and was established as Coventry University in 1992. The Phoenix, a mythical bird that represents how the city of Coventry rebuilt itself after World War II, serves as the university's logo.
Rankings reveal Coventry University's dedication to providing top-notch instruction and its emphasis on practical research. The Guardian University Guide 2022 selected Coventry University as the top university in the Midlands. The university was also included on The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021's shortlist for University of the Year. According to the National Student Survey (NSS) 2021, 76 percent of students at Coventry University are overall satisfied.
The Coventry University Group is the name given to the five places where Coventry University has campuses.
