Thompson Rivers University was founded in 1970. For 45 years, it has taken pride in providing an excellent education to every student that comes from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives, at various stages of the learning journey. Thompson Rivers is a Canadian leader in knowledge export, delivering TRU curricula overseas through joint and accredited programs with institutional partners in China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Dubai.

The university undertakes a wide range of customized training and consulting projects for international clients. One of the largest streams of programming in this area combines English language and teacher training for groups of qualified teachers from abroad. It is a comprehensive, learner centred, environmentally responsible institution that serves the regional, national, and international learners and the communities through high quality and flexible education, training, research and scholarship. The university empowers the students to reach their goals with flexible learning options, individualized student services, hands on learning opportunities, and a diverse, inclusive environment.

The University of Warwick is ranked 62nd in the QS World University Rankings 2020, with five subject areas listed within the global top 20.

Thompson Rivers University Campus

TRU’s Kamloops and Williams Lake campuses are located on the traditional territory of the Secwepemc peoples, in British Columbia’s southern interior. In Kamloops (from the Secwepemc word for “meeting of the waters”), the main campus overlooks the junction of the North Thompson and South Thompson rivers, from which the university gets its name.

Teaching Quality

TRU maintains a high standard of quality assurance and holds an Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation through the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training (AEST). Standards for maintaining this trademark are outlined on AEST’s website under Education Quality Assurance. TRU must meet or exceed these qualifications, set out by the Ministry.

Designation is assessed on an annual basis. The University must demonstrate that it is in compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, and muncipal statutes, regulations, and bylaws. Further, TRU must be in good standing with any relevant quality assurance or regulatory body for which the University offers educational programs.

In addition to other requirements as stated in the Education Quality Assurance: Policy and Procedures Manual (March 2018), TRU must operate in accordance with the academic governance framework set out in the Thompson Rivers University Act and University Act, and participate in periodic Quality Assurance Process Audits.

  • Thompson Rivers University offers comprehensive financial aids in forms of bursaries, scholarships, awards, work-study, loans, and grants.
  • The University through the support of foundation and volunteers, individuals, businesses, and community organizations offers 2.5 million dollars annually to students.
  • Some of the aids are awarded directly through Student Awards & Financial Aid, while others are in collaboration with the appropriate government office.
  • Financial aids can be awarded based on recommendations by faculty while some are automatically awarded based on student's/applicant's performance.
  • Students who have completed at least a semester of studies at the University are eligible for more than 500 aids and prizes are available.
  • 43% of eligible entrance scholarship applicants were offered a scholarship award and 96% of scholarships offer worth above 1000 CAD is awarded annually to students with an 85% average or higher.

Alumni

The TRU Alumni Association was established in 1990 and serves the alumni of Cariboo College, UCC and Thompson Rivers University. The association has thousands of members in all parts of the world and in all walks of life. Every student of TRU becomes a member of the Alumni Association upon graduation.
