Okanagan College Highlights

College Info

Okanagan Institution was the first college to operate in British Columbia and was founded in Summerland in 1906. In 1995, the institution's name was changed to Okanagan University College (OUC). However, in 2005, when OUC had been split into two halves, UBC (University of British Columbia) and OC, the earlier name of Okanagan College was reinstated (Okanagan College).

Four main campuses make up Okanagan. The first is in the Okanagan Valley city of Kelowna, which is situated on Okanagan Lake. The Okanagan word for "grizzly bear" is Kelowna. At the Kelowna Campus, the Trades Complex has undergone renovation and expansion. The building complex was completed in September 2016 and met LEED Platinum Standards. For its environmentally friendly architectural design, it won prizes. The Kelowna campus' Centre of Excellence had begun operations in 2009. The structure has LEED Gold certification. The second campus is at Penticton, which is sandwiched between Skaha and Okanagan lakes. The third site is located in Vernon, which has the name of Forbes George Vernon, a former British Columbian legislator. The fourth campus is situated near Salmon Arm, a summertime tourist destination.

The Sustainable Construction Management Technology (SCMT) Program at Okanagan is well-known. It has its headquarters at the Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence on the Penticton Campus. Students that participate in this programme learn about green technologies and sustainable building practises. Sustainability is one of Okanagan College's fundamental principles. 2015 saw the Jim Pattison Center of Excellence get LEED Platinum certification. The structure was built in 2011 and was recognised as the greenest post-secondary building in all of Canada in 2016.

The apprenticeship, trades, vocational training, continuing education, and academic programmes offered by Okanagan College are diverse. In addition, Okanagan offers courses in health, technology, adult basic education, and special education. English as a Second Language Training, four-year degree programmes in computer information and business, and trades and vocational programmes have all drawn a lot of attention from international students. The college's Transfer Program offers courses in gender studies, chemistry, physics, history, psychology, and biology.

Canadian poet Shane Koyczan, member of the Canadian House of Commons Dan Albas, author and educator Robyn Bourgeois, Canadian curler Kevin Folk, politician Todd Keller, and politician Norah Bowman are among the noteworthy alumni of Okanagan College.
