MUN, commonly known as Memorial University, is a multidisciplinary institution committed to excellence, innovation, and originality in teaching, scholarship, research, and public engagement. In 1925, it was founded as Memorial University College (MUC) as a tribute to the Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in World War I. The institution is considered as one of Atlantic Canada's largest universities, with a community of academics and students from throughout the world, including more than 18,000 students from more than 100 countries and more than 95,000 alumni worldwide. Additionally, it has received recognition as one of Canada's finest comprehensive colleges.
There are four major campuses and two satellite campuses at Memorial University. The school's main campus is in St. John's, and it provides a number of academic programmes in a city setting. The Grenfell campus of the university is known for its environmental and fine arts programmes. One of the largest maritime teaching facilities in the world is thought to be its Marine Institute. The institution employs 2,400 staff workers and 1,300 plus faculty members to support its many campuses. There are six faculties at Memorial University of Newfoundland, including those for the humanities, business administration, engineering, medical, and science. Additionally, it contains six schools, including ones for social work, music, graduate studies, pharmacy, and human kinetics. There are numerous undergraduate and graduate degree programmes offered by them, which is well-known. The institution also offers a wide selection of undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, and diploma programmes. These are further enhanced by extensive online courses and degrees. Memorial University currently offers 125 exchange programmes in almost 40 different nations.
At the moment, Memorial University is home to about 19,000 full- and part-time students (including undergraduate and graduate students). The majority of the students—around 85%—are from Newfoundland and Labrador. There are more than 3,400 full- and part-time international students registered at the university. These students, who make up 20% of the student body, are from more than 110 different nations. The university enjoys a strong reputation for leadership in teaching, research, and public involvement thanks to its 100,000 distinguished alumni from around the world. The British biologist Mary Constance Cecile Lobban, novelist Wayne Johnston, and minister of education and early childhood development Dale Kirby are just a few of the notable alumni of this organisation.
