Laurentian University Highlights

College Info

Le Collège du Sacré-Coeur, founded in 1913 by the Jesuit Fathers, is where Laurentian University's history begins. The organisation was established as the University of Sudbury in 1957 and started awarding degrees. A provincial law gave Laurentian University the corporate framework it needed in 1960 to become a bilingual federation with members from the United, Roman Catholic, and Anglican churches. The University of Sudbury, Huntington University, established in 1960 by the United Church, and Thorneloe University, established in 1961 by the Anglican Church, were all members of the Laurentian University Federation. Up until the opening of the new campus in 1964, the university held classes at a temporary location in downtown Sudbury. In 1963, Le Collège Universitaire de Hearst and Algoma University College became connected with Laurentian University. The university came in at number 12 in the category of "Canada's top comprehensive universities" in the 2020 Maclean's rankings.

The 765-acre campus of Laurentian University is located in Sudbury, Ontario, next to the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area. It has great academic, residential, and recreational amenities and top-notch infrastructure. The campus provides a setting ideal for quick and effective learning with roomy classrooms, cutting-edge labs, a bookstore, a speech and language clinic, and a sizable library. Additionally, it offers a variety of culinary alternatives, including a grill, cafeteria, convenience store, Tim Hortons, Café Bistro, Topper's Pizza, Starbucks, and Subway outlets, in addition to comfortable on-campus lodging. The university also provides a number of on-campus recreational activities, such as swimming lessons, school field trips, and youth and aquatic programmes, in addition to these amenities. There are chances to play sports including basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, golf, and lacrosse there.

Numerous graduate and undergraduate programmes are available at Laurentian University in a variety of subject areas, including anthropology, communication, ancient studies, economics, arts, sociology, economics, history, social science, law, music, philosophy, psychology, and theatre. It gives students the choice of taking classes in either French or English. Additionally, the school awards certificates of bilingualism to pupils who complete 15 or more courses in either French or English (whichever is not their language of study). Each year, it enrols over 9,000 students, and its faculty is recognised and skilled. The faculty to student ratio at the university is an exceptional 1:18. Foreign students from 62 different nations make up 6.5% of the school's student body.
