The University of Adelaide is an open institution of higher learning and the third-oldest university in Australia, having been founded in 1874. The university started awarding the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1876. Additionally, it is the first institution in Australia's University Council to elect a woman. Additionally, the University of Adelaide is the first institution in South Australia to advocate against smoking. The university's security officers were able to limit smoking on campus because to this strategy. Additionally, smoking was banned in the university's residence halls.
North Terrace is the primary campus among the university's four campuses. The Art Gallery of South Australia is situated all around it. The entire campus is covered in vegetation. Along with Elder Hall, Mitchell Building, Ligertwood Building, and Napier Building, the site is home to Bonython Hall, a well-known historic structure. All four campuses are located adjacent to dining establishments, pharmacies, and numerous other stores that cater to students' basic needs. The university's academic programme is divided into five faculties: the faculties of arts, mathematics, professions, and sciences, as well as the faculties of health and medical sciences. These faculties comprise a number of institutions that offer students the chance to select from a long variety of disciplines in accordance with their area of interest. Edward Charles Sterling (an advocate for women's suffering), Brendon Coventry (who discovered the immune cycle), Howard Florey (who won the Nobel Prize in psychology), J.M. Coetzee (who won the Nobel Prize in literature), Alexander Fleming (who developed penicillin), and Margaret White are among the notable alumni of the university (First female judge of Supreme Court, Queensland).
